Assignment for Paper 1 (Classical Model)
As you know, in Unit 1 we are discussing the rhetorical triangle (which we have covered in this module) and Classical argument (which we are covering in the next module). Paper 1 is going to be a Classical argument utilizing the rhetorical appeals.
Though we have not officially covered Classical argument yet, it is important that you have a sense of what we’re doing over the next couple of weeks. Therefore, you see the assignment for Paper 1 below.
Rather, you will use your time in Module 2 to prewrite and outline your paper, using the writing process we have reviewed in the lecture this week.
In Module 3, you will use this prewriting, plus what we cover in Module 3, to write the full draft of the paper.
Topic
The topic of the paper is as follows: what do you see as a threat to your future? To get started with this topic, imagine your goals and path you wish to take in life. Consider areas of your life like your career, your relationships, your family, and your dreams and what might stand in your way.
Please note that this will be a personal essay; there is no research involved in Paper 1. It is all straight from your brain. Papers that use outside sources, whether or not they are cited, will be subject to the penalties for plagiarism.
Also please note that you will be sharing your paper with at least one classmate, so choose something appropriate for a public audience.
Structure
We will be using the Classical model for this assignment. Here is what the paper will look like, more or less:
This includes no research, remember. Use only what you already know and think.
Title the paper something interesting yet relevant.
1) Intro 1: This is the attention-getter, a short paragraph that grabs readers’ attention and establishes the importance of the issue.
2) Intro 2: This is the overview of the topic–what it’s about, what how will it affect your future, personally, and how will it harm society? Who uses these policies? What should ultimately be done with the theory/policy?
Thesis: State your main claim at the end of Intro 2.
3) Body paragraph: What is one reason you believe what you believe? Elaborate using emotional and factual examples from your own life/experiences.
4) Body paragraph: What is another reason you believe what you believe? Elaborate using emotional and factual examples from your own life/experiences.
(If you have another reason, you will have another body paragraph on your side here.)
5) Refutation: (Opposing view and Refutation are in the same paragraph)
Opposing View: What do others say about this threat, or why do they believe what they believe?
Refutation: What is wrong with the opponent’s logic?
6) Conclusion: Reinforce your main point without repeating the thesis. Try to inspire readers to take action.
Formatting and Mechanics
Use MLA Formatting, as discussed in the lectures.
Make sure that you proofread your paper carefully before turning it in.
Length
The rough draft and the final draft of this paper should be 3-4 pages long. This means that at minimum, your paper should hit the bottom of page 3. Anything less is an incomplete paper.
