Philosophy of food
You will use several methods to study social and cultural aspects of food. One approach that you have not used is a comparative study of how cultures use their own Specific Value System (Philosophy) governing their Food Intake. For example
American food habits have been influenced by many and varied factors.
Sharing food is an important aspect in most Native American societies. Also other cultures have similar belief system associated with specific values.
Some cultures will not eat meat influenced by value system “of not killing living beings”.
Some cultures have specific edict about food from its production, distribution, procurement, preparation, who will eat it, rituals and etiquettes, etc. about food intake.
Some cultures are very close to nature and do not want to interfere or modify it.
All through the semester we talked about a holistic vision of food, (Social & Cultural), and the various factors that influence food intake, particularly Culture, Beliefs, Values, Religion, Health, Medicine, Economics, Geography, History, Food availability (e.g. eating insects) and other issues related with food all over the world— keeping this in mind, think about your own philosophy of food. Why do you eat what you eat and how does it impact your perception and understanding of the world cultures and your own culture in context to food?
Information to include
Select 3 cultures that are distinctly different and discuss and compare their specific value system (philosophy) governing food intake. Include all areas influencing food intake.
Write your personal philosophy of food. In other words, what beliefs (theories) and attitudes govern your food behaviors (Just as an example; your definition of food, your selection, preparation methods and eating of food, rituals and etiquette, and your ideas about nourishment/harm etc.)?
Compare your philosophy of food intake with the value system of the 3 cultures discussed.
Use and cite references appropriately in body of essay/paper and bibliography (APA Style) – minimum of three references for UG and five for G students
The Final exam paper should be a minimum of 6 pages doubled spaced. It can be over 6 pages but should not be under 6 pages.
The grading system is based on how well you convey your philosophy and the 3 cultures. With comparisons and the arguments you use to support your beliefs and attitudes. Use references for support. The references should be integrated into your personal writing style.
If you haven’t written a composition lately, recall the components are: introduction including the objective (purpose), body-central idea(s) to fulfill the objective, and summary.
