Using the definition in course readings define Ethics, Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility. Identify your approach of choice and explain why you prefer it.
Ethics essentially involves how we act, live, lead our lives, and treat others. Our choices and decision-making processes and our moral principles and values that govern our behaviors regarding what is right and wrong are also part of ethics. ([Principles of Management]. (2019, March 20). Ethics is the embodiment and personification of values. The many stances or views that can be taken corporately and individually can range from Utilitarianism, Universalism, a Rights Approach, Justice, Virtue, Common Good and Ethical Relativism. Ultimately aligning a person within a corporate responsibility and identifying their social responsibilities or values. Easily put it becomes part of a core, whether corporate or individually.
My personal view of the ethics standpoint is a mix of universalism, virtue, and common good. It lends itself naturally to my personal values. I am very duty based. The terminal and instrumental values I utilize from day to day are based on this perception. I try to align myself with this type of corporate and social values or ethics program. I am not a relativism type of person. I tend strongly to the values and ethics and do not match well with a “When in Rome” view. Admittedly that has cause problems at times. The organizations and social groups I belong to have strong ethics and a goal of self and group improvement. Ethics also shows strongly in the leadership skills I apply whether at home or on the job. In closing I prefer this view of ethics because of my nature and belief, which to me is the core of ethics itself.
Corporate Social Responsibility also known as CSR refers to a businesses’ responsibility towards the improvement of society. It highlights upon the fact that corporations should exist beyond just making a profit and stresses the importance of making an impact on the world. Ethics is based on our existence: how we live, lead our lives, act, and treat those around us. Business Ethics can be defined as applied ethics that govern the way in which we conduct transactions and business. It stresses the application of our values towards business.
The ethical principles that I am most aligned with are Virtue Ethics since they also relate to Utilitarianism. Utilitarianism stood out to me because of its emphasis on taking in the bigger picture of individuals, their values, and their needs. I have long been able to take in the bigger picture of the environment around me and have often taken much time to consider the implications of whether or not a certain action or decision would affect others. This consideration for others is something aligned with what my “best self” would take into account and relates to virtue ethics. I now see the subjective nature in which virtuosity can be measured and see how there are flaws in this ethical approach along with others. Regardless, this remains the approach that has been passed down to me and most naturally aligns with my values.
